The third biannual international conference of the European Society for the Study of Western Esotericism (ESSWE) is fast approaching. As previously announced, “ESSWE3” will be held in Szeged, Hungary, on July 6-10. A detailed program of the conference, listing speakers, paper titles, place and time, etc., has recently been published by the conference organizers. Check it out.
This means that the titles of the plenary lectures have also been revealed. To maybe entice someone out there last minute, here are the keynotes:
6 July, 19:30–20:30: Michael J. B. Allen, (UCLA / English), USA
“Glory, Transfiguration, and the Fire Within: Ficino on the Metaphysics and Psychology of Light”
7 July, 11:00–11:50: Lina Bolzoni, (Scuola Normale Superiore / Italian, Pisa), ITALY
“The Memory Theatre of Giulio Camillo: Alchemy, Rhetoric, and Deification in the Renaissance”
8 July, 11:00–11:50: Moshe Idel, (Hebrew University / Jewish Thought, Jerusalem), ISRAEL
“The Shield of David: An History of a Symbol from Jewish Kabbalah to Western Esotericism”
9 July, 11:00–11:50: Pia Brinzeu, (University of the West / English, Timisoara), ROMANIA
“Romania and India: Spaces of Initiation for Eliade and Brancusi”
In addition to these keynotes, there are about 80 individual papers to be presented in the panel sessions, with a great span of variety as to thematic and historical foci. In other words there should be more than enough to look forward to for the general student or researcher in the field of esotericism.
I should also point out that pre-registrations are still open for a few more days – until June 20. If you want to pre-register, you may do so using this electronic form.
